CALA’s bespoke Orchard Lane development in the pretty conservation village of Dirleton, East Lothian, is the backdrop for a riveting new exhibition of old photographs which give a fascinating insight into village life over the last ninety years.

The exhibition has been developed by CALA Homes in conjunction with the Dirleton Village Association as a thank you to the local community and to coincide with the launch of the showhome at Orchard Lane, the housebuilder’s exclusive development in the village.

Mr Nigel Bruce, Chair of the Dirleton Village Association says: “We are thrilled to have the chance to work with CALA to create a public exhibition with this amazing collection of photographs. It would be tremendous for the village if the success of the exhibition means that we can find a way to keep these revealing images on permanent display.”

One of the earliest photographs features two local children who, it is believed, were taking part in a summer concert, standing outside the Kirk gates in Dirleton.

To launch the exhibition, two children, Sophie Smith (P3) and Jamie Clydesdale (P4) from Dirleton Primary School re-enacted the photograph on the same spot.

Orchard Lane features only nine stunning five bedroom country homes designed specifically to be in keeping with the character of the conservation village and built using traditional materials and construction methods.

Kevin Whitaker, Managing Director of CALA Homes (East) adds: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring this fascinating exhibition to life. The photographs are taken as far back as the early 1920s and reveal much about past times in the village - the school, people at work, transport and so on. You can see how Dirleton, a village with a rich heritage, has evolved over the last century without losing its tranquillity and charm.”   

Exhibition Opening Times

The exhibition at CALA’s Orchard Lane development on Manse Road, Dirleton, opens to the public on Sunday 9^th December and is open daily from 2pm - 4pm until Thursday 20^th December.
