The majority of people are satisfied with their new homes, according to a study commissioned by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe).
Called A Sense of Place, the research was based on people in new housing developments and suggests that 91 per cent of people are satisfied with their new homes.
However, the study also highlights areas where consumers see room for improvement, such as community spirit.
Almost half (45 per cent) of respondents believe that their neighbours "go their own way, rather than doing things together and trying to help each other" while 30 per cent felt that their neighbourhood does not have a distinct character.
Commenting on the results, Stewart Baseley, executive chairman of the Home Builders Federation, notes: "Cabe's research indicates that homebuilders are very successful in meeting the needs of new homebuyers.
"However, the report identifies improvements to the wider design of housing developments could be made."
As such, he called for planners and local authorities to work closely with housebuilders in future.
